Decentralizing Science

Between 1883 and 1929, Andrew Carnegie funded over 2,500 libraries across the globe. His grants were contingent on communities agreeing to provide land and ongoing operational support while maintaining free public access to the library. This innovative model allowed local communities to play a key role in fostering education. By 1919, nearly half of all U.S. libraries were Carnegie libraries, creating a lasting legacy of free learning spaces that continue to empower people today.
